Level Up #3: Introducing Cap 280 — The 2-Week Tactical Experiment

19 October 2026

Starting with Week 4, 5v5 battles are entering a 2-week trial with a 280 cumulative L15 team cap. Here is the data behind the decision and what it means for your lineups.

Over the past three weeks, more than 1,000 battles have been fought on SoClassic. We’ve seen incredible finishes, clutch decisive saves, and dramatic ladder climbs. But looking closely at the data and listening to community feedback, one pattern became impossible to ignore: the dominance of raw gallery firepower over tactical scouting.

Starting tomorrow with Week 4 (Tuesday, Oct 20), we are launching an official two-week trial of Cap 280 across all 5v5 battles.

Here is why we are doing this, the numbers behind it, and why this is going to make your battles significantly more thrilling.

The Data: Why Uncapped 5v5 Needed an Evolution

We pulled the numbers on all 888 lineups submitted by our 20 most active managers since October 1st:

  • 280.1 pts: That is the exact average cumulative L15 across all lineups submitted by top managers.

  • 50% of all teams submitted were already naturally sitting at or below 280.

  • The extreme end: A handful of lineups routinely reached 345 to 365 L15 — five absolute superstars stacked into one team.

When a team with an average floor of 72 points per player meets a well-scouted lineup sitting at 52 points, the matchup is often decided before the first whistle blows. It reduces the game to who owns the most expensive collection rather than who made the sharper tactical reads this weekend.

Fantasy football is at its best when every slot is a conscious choice.

What is Cap 280?

The rule is straightforward:

  • The sum of the official Sorare L15 scores of your 5 starters cannot exceed 280 points (an average of 56.0 pts per card).

  • We use Sorare’s official L15 (Last 15 average score) directly pulled from the Sorare API.

Inside the Lineup Builder, you’ll now see a live tracker looking like:

268 / 280 L15

If your selection exceeds 280, the gauge turns red and asks you to balance your roster before queueing for a battle.

Why Cap 280 is an Opportunity

Cap 280 isn't about banning superstars. Quite the opposite: it makes choosing a superstar a meaningful tactical commitment.

With a 280 ceiling, here are the kind of builds that come alive:

  1. The Hero Build: Play your tier-1 superstar (L15: 68) + two reliable workhorses (55 + 54) + two high-upside value picks (51 + 52) = 280 / 280.

  2. The Balanced Machine: Five consistent starters averaging 56 L15 each, backing team cohesion and floor over variance.

  3. The Scout’s Edge: Spot an out-of-form player or a sleeper with a low L15 (45–48) entering an easy home fixture to free up budget for your attack.

Smaller galleries get a genuine puncher’s chance against the biggest squads. Deep galleries get rewarded for their scouting knowledge across mid-tier leagues rather than just fielding their 5 highest card values on repeat.

A 2-Week Trial: We Decide Together

This is an experimental test running across Week 4 and Week 5 (through November 3rd).

During these two weeks, we will monitor:

  • Matchmaking queue speed and liquidity.

  • Win rates between larger and smaller galleries.

  • The variety of cards fielded across the community.

Nothing is set in stone. At the end of the two weeks, we will share the results openly and gather your feedback before deciding whether to keep Cap 280 permanent, adjust the threshold, or introduce dedicated capped & open tiers.

Week 4 kicks off tomorrow at 12:00 PM Paris time. Head into your gallery, start scouting your value picks, and let’s see who really has the best tactical eye on SoClassic.

See you on the pitch.
